Payton Dindu, Jr, shot dead after assaulting an officer with a screwdriver in Vegas

The incident began when police responded to a call to the gun range. The call described a man allegedly rifling through a customer’s bag during a break for a concealed carry course, reported Las Vegas Review-Journal. Footage shows Payton seemingly going through a backpack under a table. Another man approaches, visibly disturbed at the man going through the bag. Police say Payton attempted to steal a gun from the backpack.

So employees escorted Payton from the building. He then allegedly became aggressive, threatening range/store employees, reported the Las Vegas Review-Journal. When officers spotted Payton in the parking lot, they ordered him to the front a patrol car.

“Mr. Payton ignored those instructions and started to walk away while hiding his right hand in his jacket pocket,” Zimmerman said, reported the Las Vegas Review-Journal.

That’s when the scene deteriorated rapidly. Footage shows officers attempt to grab the suspect several times. The suspect pulls away, finally pulling a screwdriver and attacking the officers. Footage shows him violently stab one officer.

As one officer goes down, her partner opens fire. Footage shows the officer and three range employees engage the suspect, fatally striking him. Authorities pronounced Payton dead at the scene, reported the Las Vegas Review-Journal.

Police reported the officer fired nine rounds, without knowing how many times the officer struck the suspect, reported the Las Vegas Review-Journal. However, they did say the suspect received 14 gunshot wounds. So it’s clear the gun range workers made a dramatic difference in the fight.

Despite suffering a fracture near her eye, the injured officer was treated and released from a local hospital, the Las Vegas Review-Journal reported.
